NAFCO contracted to demolish and replace the preparation plant and conveyors at Cliffs Natural Resources’ Oak Grove facility, which were severely damaged by the tornadoes that swept through Alabama in April 2011. The scope of this project included the engineering, manufacturing, and installation of a 54-inch-belt-width plant feed conveyor, a 48-inch-belt-width refuse conveyor, a 48-inch-belt-width clean coal conveyor, two 12-foot-diameter raw coal sumps, and one 12-foot-diameter magnetite bin. The total length of these conveyor systems is more than 1,300 feet. In addition, we demolished the existing preparation plant and then engineered, manufactured, and installed the structural steel for the new preparation plant. Installation also included all piping, mechanical, electrical, roofing, and siding. In all, this upgrade increased the capacity of the plant to 1,000 tons per hour. This project included more than 1,000 tons of fabricated steel with a two coat sophisticated paint system applied for corrosion protection .
